The county does not collect your trash
This is the part that surprises people who move to Loudoun from somewhere that does municipal collection. Loudoun County does not operate a universal residential trash service. Instead, collection is carried out by private haulers that hold a county solid waste collection permit, and it is arranged either by your HOA or directly by you.
That is why there is no single county schedule to look up. Your collection day was set by whoever arranged your service, not by the county.
So who is emptying your bin?
Almost always one of three answers:
- Your HOA arranged it. In the big planned communities — Brambleton, Broadlands, South Riding, Stone Ridge and most of Ashburn — the HOA holds the contract. It is also why everyone’s bins match.
- You arranged it yourself. Common in the older and more rural parts of the county, and in plenty of Sterling. You picked the hauler, so you picked the day and the bin.
- Your town arranged it. Only if you live inside an incorporated town — which in this service area means Leesburg.
If you genuinely do not know which applies to you, the county keeps a public list of permitted collectors, and the Department of Waste Management can point you at the haulers operating in your area.
Leesburg is the exception
Inside the Leesburg town limits, the Town contracts curbside collection for trash, recycling and yard waste, and assigns collection days by quadrant of the town rather than by community. If you are in Leesburg you almost certainly know your day; if you are anywhere else in this service area, you probably had to find it out from your HOA.
What this has to do with clean bins
Two practical things. First, whoever collects your trash is not cleaning your bin — no hauler in the county includes that. The container is yours to look after, which is the entire reason this service exists.
Second, when you book a clean it genuinely helps to know your collection day, because a bin is far easier to clean properly when it is empty. Mention it and Nick will work around it.
